Officials with Volusia County’s Emergency Management Division are warning residents to take the proper precautions this weekend as excessive heat is forecasted for the area.

According to a release, portions of Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi are under heat advisories. While the heat advisory thus far has not been extended into Volusia County, temperatures for this area may reach as high as 99°F on Saturday – with the high humidity making it feel as hot as 104°F-107°F. The heat index will peak Saturday afternoon, and the extreme heat will continue into Sunday afternoon. Residents should stay out of the sun for long periods, drink plenty of fluids and stay in an air-conditioned room as much as possible.

Residents who find themselves outdoors and need an air-conditioned break from the heat have a place to cool down at one of the ten Volusia County Libraries.

“In extreme conditions, it is critically important for people to be cautious and manage their risk,” said Volusia County’s Interim Emergency Management Director, Jim Judge. “This is not something to take lightly. With the excessive heat, the best thing to do is stay indoors in the air conditioning. If you have to go outside, do not be in the sun for a long time, avoid strenuous activity and be sure to stay hydrated.”
