In a resolute stand to prioritize the safety and well-being of its residents, the Ormond Beach City Commission has firmly rejected a proposal by Belvedere Terminals for a fuel farm project at 874 Hull Road in Ormond Beach. The decision was met with an emphatic "heck no!" as quoted by Mayor Bill Partington during last night's commission meeting.

The decision followed mounting concerns expressed by residents and the City Commission regarding potential risks posed by the proposed fuel farm to the community. The project's proximity to vital community assets such as the City's Youth Sports Complex, residential zones, and critical watersheds like the Tomoka River were a particular concern, along with the strain on local infrastructure, heightened traffic, and increased demand for emergency services.

"Our primary responsibility is to the people of Ormond Beach. This decision underscores our unwavering commitment to safeguarding our community's health and safety. While we appreciate the nuances of development, it should never overshadow the greater good of our residents," Mayor Partington emphasized.

City Attorney Randy Hayes, after a thorough evaluation, confirmed that the City Commission had voted against providing utilities to the proposed project and additionally ruled out annexing the property into the City.

"After assessing all the available options and considering the potential repercussions to our community, it became clear that we possess the discretion to deny utilities to the proposed project. Exercising this discretion in favor of our community's safety and well-being is, in our view, the most prudent course of action. The City Commission demonstrated that unwavering in the commitment to protect Ormond Beach and its residents from any potential harm," said City Attorney Randy Hayes.

In alignment with this strong stance, the City of Ormond Beach has actively opposed the project, sending letters of objection to Belvedere Terminals and seeking support from key figures, including the Volusia County Legislative Delegation, Governor DeSantis, Congressman Waltz, and FDEP.

The City has reaffirmed its dedication to collaborative efforts with Volusia County, extending support to legal initiatives aimed at halting the project and exploring alternative, more suitable locations. This collaborative approach underscores the City's commitment to finding resolutions that prioritize the best interests of its residents.
