Over 4,000 high school seniors from Volusia County Schools celebrated a significant milestone as they received their diplomas during the graduation ceremonies held from May 31 to June 4, 2023, at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, where the students proudly crossed the stage in the presence of their families, principals, teachers, school board members, district administration, and Superintendent Dr. Carmen Balgobin.

“This year’s graduating class has overcome unimaginable hurdles and achieved so much during their time with Volusia County Schools academically, athletically, and professionally," said Dr. Carmen Balgobin, Volusia County Schools Superintendent. "I know they will continue to soar high as they spread their wings and move on to their next adventures.”

Reflecting on the achievements of these graduates, Volusia County Schools is pleased to share some impressive statistics from recent graduations. A total of 4,139 students graduated in the spring, demonstrating their dedication and hard work throughout their high school years. Among them, 629 students received the Distinguished Scholar designation, highlighting their outstanding academic accomplishments. Additionally, 1,771 students were honored with the Merit designation for their notable achievements across various fields.

293 students received the prestigious Florida Seal of Biliteracy for their fluency in multiple languages, celebrating Volusia County Schools' commitment to language proficiency. Furthermore, 150 students earned associate degrees while still in high school, showcasing their dedication to advanced education. These remarkable young individuals collectively contributed over 200,000 hours of community service, demonstrating their ability to positively impact their communities.

Moreover, more than 120 students from this year's graduating class have chosen to serve their country by joining the military, exemplifying their sense of duty and patriotism.

This year's graduations were particularly significant as they marked the inaugural ceremony for Volusia Online Learning (VOL), which conducted its first-ever graduation alongside the ten traditional high schools in the county. The participating schools included Atlantic High School, DeLand High School, Deltona High School, Mainland High School, New Smyrna Beach High School, Pine Ridge High School, Seabreeze High School, Spruce Creek High School, T. DeWitt Taylor Middle-High School, and University High School.

“I truly believe it takes a village to raise a child,” Balgobin said. “I am so grateful to all of the parents, family members, educators, community members, and school and district staff who have played a role in shaping the lives of these graduates and preparing them for success.”
